MARILYN EASTON" <marilyneaston@msn.com>

John Easton married Marilla Smyth daughter of Thomas Smyth who petioned for land as a Daughter of a UE.  I don't know at his point the names of
Joseph's children.
Have a genealogy assembled by  William Starr Easton in 1899 so I have all the connections he discovered which is pretty much everybody to that point. My father completed the record down to me.  I'd like to know if Joseph actually fought with the Loyalist troops in the Revolutionary War?  What happened to those people between the end of the war and 1792 when they emigrated to Canada and got the land grants?   Joseph Easton is listed on the Executive List of UEL's.  He is in the 1796 census of Elizabethtown where only heads of family are listed.  In the 1801 census of Elizabethtown he is not listed so was probably in Wolford by then.

Grgrgrandmoth, MARY PETERSON (1824-1893), mar THOMAS LA POINTE (1825-1872) lvd  E'town;  obtained maiden name from her dau's (EMILY LAPOINTE BRAYTON, 1854-1926) death registration.  According to 1871 census,  a woman, age 69, named SARAH PETERSON living in Mary & Thomas' household,  German, born  ON, Church of England.  The 1871 census data make her birth year 1801 or 1802, depending on her birth date and when the census was taken.
A SARAH PETERSON  bur in  same plot as MARY & THOMAS LAPOINTE in the Lyn Cem.  From the cem transcriptions there appears to be one tombstone for the "family" plot,  on north side is inscribed:  Sarah PETERSON died  June 29, 1875 aged 73 y'rs 8 m's Going by the transcription of the tombstone, her birth date would be about 10/29/1801. Nothing in transcriptions to identify Sarah's relationship to anyone in the LaPointe family.
From pub "Early Census of Elizabethtown Township 1796 -1848", the following is listed:
  Year  No  Name
  1796    95  Peterson, Conrad
1801  665  Peterson, Coonrad  Adult male
1801  667  Peterson, Elizabeth  Child female
1801  666  Peterson, Lucy  Adult female
1802    66  Peterson, Coonrod Adult male
1802    66  Peterson, Elizabeth  Child female
1802    66  Peterson, Lusy  Adult female
1802    66  Peterson, Sarah  Child female
1803  250  Peterson, Conrad  Adult male
1803  250  Peterson, Lucy  Adult female
1803  250  Peterson, Betsey  Child Female
1803  250  Peterson, Sarah Child Female

SARAH PETERSON first above in 1802, but not 1801 data, giving her birth year of 1801 or 1802,  as Sarah Peterson bur with Thomas & Mary LaPointe & the one on the 1871 census.  Sarah is shown in 1804 & 1807 censuses, but starting in1808 with format changed,  no longer shown.  Trying to find relationship Sarah Peterson had to Mary Peterson\LaPointe. &  if Sarah Peterson bur with gg grprnts was  dau of THE Conrad Peterson shown in above census.  Have seen birth yrs for Sarah Peterson dau of CONRAD PETERSON & LUCY DEWOLF on web ranging from 1803 to 1807, but  those make no sense when compared to census info.  Can't find  descs of Conrad's three sons, James (b 1804 to 1807), Samuel (b 1804 to 1807) & William (c 1811) to see if a Mary listed. & given Mary's age, don't think William would be a good candidate.
Mary listed nationality in the 1871 census as English meaning her fath was probably of English descent if she followed the custom of the time by assuming her father's origins; a memb of same church as Sarah, while Mary's husb Thomas  listed as  Roman Catholic &  French.  Mary & Sarah  have the same last names. Possibility  Mary was dau of Sarah, & Sarah unmar dau of Conrad Peterson & Lucy DeWolf.

When, recently (Nov 12, 2002), fath passed away,  gained control of his assets & personal belongings, came across many old documents, letter, pictures.  Moth informed  that all pertain to  fam from fath's side. Of all documents, two stood out. One  from  "Department of Interior"  - Bureau of Pensions dated Feb 18, 1893.  It was submitted form that clearly stated that his rank was a "surgeon" and during his tenure thoroughout the war. He served under three colonels. They are listed as follows:
Date of Enlishment  Length of Service  Rank           "Officers under whom service was rendered"
June 28, 1775 to Jan 1776       Surgeon                           John Fellows
Jan 1, 1776 for  12 months           "
Edmund Phinney
Mar 14, 1778  to August 8, 1882   "                                 John Crane
Other document was application for membership to "The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution"   from state of  Missouri & the city of Hannibal (which is where I was born, as well as grfath & his fath).  The National Number on the application is # 2705.  This application was filled out and submitted by  -  Sallie Rodel Hatch, below she claims that she is a descendant of Dr. Samuel Adams 1745- 1819 of Bath, Maine.  Inside she goes into detail about his duties. One in particular that stood out was " Jan 1778, was in his excellancy  Gen. Washington camp at Valley Forge"   Mrs. Hatch's stated that Dr. Samuel Adams' had wife named Abigail Dodge Adams & son "William Henry Hatdh".  From Abigail's side of the family I believe.
Mrs. Hatchs was dau of William Henry Hatch" confusing because her handwriting become indecipherable.    Am I a descent of Dr. Samuel Adams?

Joseph Poulin, born about 1809-1810, married Priscilla Lapointe at E'town, Leeds  March 15, 1845. Unfortunately this marriage record does not list Joseph's parents. Priscilla was born Feb. 17, 1828 at Addison in Leeds.
Could not find Joseph's death record at Ontario Archives. He was alive in 1881 Brockville census (age 73, RC, born PQ) but by 1901, his wife was listed as widow. (In 1881, name was spelled Pulaw, in 1871 census it was spelled Poolah/Pulah/Poulaugh).  Do not know where Joseph bur -likely at E'town as his widowed wife lived there at time of his death & would have been the person who buried him.
Joseph and Priscilla had many children at Addison/Brockville. All were RC.

Trying to trace the ancestry of  gggg grandfather, William MYERS.  Know was that he was born ca 1782 somewhere in  U.S., & died in 1858 in Toronto.
Obtained some notes of  family tree of a collateral line, which mentioned that "William...was the son of John MEYERS settled in  Elizabethtown from New York L.B.L. 1790", however have been unable to find proof of a link.
Believe that John MYERs had a lot of daughters ( Olive, Lydia, Almena, Hannah, Nancy, Clarissa, Samanthy, Jane, Mary), but no sons.  Did if he had a son named William MYERS?

Wish help in figuring out the grchdn of James Umphrey UE of the Loyal Rangers?   Can identify his chdn as  Margaret, Samuel & James from the land petitions of the sons & daughters.. From the provision lists he had  a daughter over 10 and two other children, a boy & a girl under 10. It doesn't quite match up but, no doubt he had other children after 1785..
Can identify the Umphrey men in the War  of 1812 & also  the  1828 men listed in Men of Upper Canada  as Alexander & Henry who could be grchdn.
William, who  turns up in the war of 1812   didn't make a petition for land -- that I could find anyway;  could be a son or a grandson or oldest son.
Have a William  Umphrey in North Fredericksburg, Lennox County, near Napanee  as the father of Orben, Noel & James in Early Methodist Baptisms  in the 1830s. His widow  Margaret in the 1851/52 Census said she was 37 so  my William may have been born around 1810 to 1815, assuming that Margaret told her right age & William her husband was of about the same age.
William in Lennox County, if born in about 1813 or so could be the son of William or James or Samuel or Alexander or Henry  Umphrey in Leeds( I think I would opt for James )   Would like to know  if any of these sons had a William..
No  wives' names except for  Alexander who married Esther Black. She made petition as dau of Loyalist.. Think her second husb was  James Francis in 1841.

Researching  husb's line and would be interested in acquiring any information you may have on Francis Scott.  Husb's fraternal grmoth was a Scott & according to a newspaper article in the August 3, 1995 issue of The Muskoka Sun was a descendant of "United Empire Loyalist Sergeant Francis Scott of Jessup's Loyal Rangers".

Beatrice Alfreda Florence Scott (my husband's grandmother) was the daughter of William James Scott, who was the son of Lemuel Scott born Renfrew County in 1846. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for info re poss 1st mar of Diana SMITH dau of Humphrey SMITH of Wolford twsp to a man named FULLER; later mar to Benjamin BARBER.  Family story: Almeda CHURCH grdau of Diana SMITH & Benjamin BARBER talked about Auntie HUTTON of Ross or Horton in Renfrew Co.  Who has been identified as Rosanna Almeda FULLER wife of George E. HUTTON (son of John HUTTON & Tabitha HASKINS); prior to mar to George HUTTON she was mar to Willard PALMER who is said to have drowned in Ottawa River. Almeda & Willard PALMER were mar 6 Oct 1835 by Wes Meth minister Rev Wm Brown with wit Wm. B. Putnam & Benjamin BarberHumphrey SMITH & fam in Montague census 1804 & 1805, Wolford census 1806 & 1807.  Diana est b ca 1794, sister Rhoda b ca 1804.  1813 census of Wolford lists Humphrey's wife Lurena SMITH as head of fam with 1 male & 1 female child - Rhoda ca age 9; Diana would have been 19 & not at home.  1812 census of E'town lists Andrew FULLER with 1 male & 2 females in household & 1813 census of Wolford lists Diana FULLER as head of household with 1 female child.  Thad Leavitt in "The History of Leeds & Grenville" tells of Andrew FULLER who reported for military duty at Belleville at the outbreak of the War of 1812 but was shot by his sergeant when he attempted to leave to return to his family.  The theory is that Diana SMITH mar Andrew PALMER ca 1811 when 18 yrs of age, moved to E'town & had dau named Almeda; after Andrew's death in summer of 1812 she mvd back to Wolford to be near her prts where she mar Benjamin BARBER & had son Benjamin who was wit at Almeda's mar to Willard PALMER.  Need info to prove or disprove this theory.

Joseph Soper/Sopher/Soaper an UEL.  Most anxious to receive as much info on the Soper family from the Bay of Quinte as your members may be able to help me with. I would be most thankful to receive any and all news on the Sopers.
[ MAYBE THERE IS A] SON OF SAMUEL AND BATHSHEBA NAMED JOSEPH
Kathy Varga of Bradford is in possession of a letter written by Morgan Crewson which mentions his g grandfather's older brother Joseph {should be our John's older brother}. The letter says Joseph escaped to Canada, Bay of Quinte, {Adolphustown is one of the Cataraqui Twps on the Bay of Quinte}. At the beginning of the American Rev War, in order that the Patriots could not make him volunteer. Joseph was supposed to be about 17 years of age.  Morgan Crewson said there were still descendants of Joseph in and around the Ottawa area.

I have land index cards from Ellie Thomas of a Joseph Soper - Queen's Ranger 1780, and looking at the petition it shows his land {1790} in Sophiasburg, Prince Edward County, lot 33 Con 1 W of GP. This land is situated from Fish Lake to the Bay of Quinte, just south of Big Island. The application was made from Kingston.
The Queens Rangers were formed Aug 1776 to Oct 1777. However, muster rolls dated 24 Dec 1776 and March 30th 1777 for four of the 10 companies were discovered at the Public Records Office in Eng. The records appear in Treasury Solicitor, Class 11, Volume 220, and have not been microfilmed. also I must try the British Military and Naval Records, 1778-1779, "C" Series.

In John Grave Simcoe's "A Journal of the Operations of the Queen's Rangers" shows that the regiment was stationed at these points in June and July of 1778:
June 17-18,         Camden County., NJ
June 19-23,         Burlington County., NJ
June 24, July 5,  Monmouth County., NJ
July 15,               Kings Bridge, Bronx County., NY

In "Early Ontario Settlers: a source book" I find a Joseph Sopher in 1786 at Adolphustown Twp., probably awaiting land. In 1785, a Joseph Sopher is in Twp #4, above Cataraqui {Adolphustown}, Muster Roll #15 he is # F182 on the page-------Bathsheba [supposedly his Mother] was in Augusta {below Cataraqui} in 1785, his sister Sarah, {if in fact they are related} in 1786 is in Osnabruck Twp [both Augusta and Osnabruck are located on the St. Lawrence River, across from NY State].

In the LAND CLAIMS OF LOYALISTS, Joseph Soaper, residence Sophiasburgh, lot 33 1NCPE issued c1790. Free grant, ref 01-A1V-VOL,009 page 066 also see 01-A1V- 009-074

We need to find out more about the Queen's Rangers. They are from NY and Mass. What battles were they in? The Queen's Loyal Rangers and the King's Loyal Americans were reorganized Nov 1781 to form the Loyal Rangers [Jessup Corp}. They were given land at Cataraqui and Oswagatchie. NOTE:  At Bennington the Queen's Rangers were nearly annihilated.

A note is from a nice person on the Loyalist List, Rick Crume, this is what he sent: "Loyalists In The Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary war" by Murtie June Clark {Baltimore: Genealogical Publ. Co., 1981} Muster Rolls of Capt. James Kerr's Company of The Queen's Rangers, show these names {RG 81 "C" Series, vol. 1864 on page 382 of the book}
25 Oct. to 23 Feb. 1781:
Private: Soper, Joseph  On Sept 11, 1777 at the battle of Brandywine Creek, the Queens  Rangers fought &  were praised for their spirited & gallant conduct. Was he old enough in 1777 or did he join after 1777?

In The Diary of Mrs Simcoe on page 220 by John Ross Robertson, she states that Dr John Gamble a surgeon, was sent to Niagara with the Queen's Rangers in 1793. The regiment was disbanded in Toronto in 1802.

In A Register of Baptisms for the Township of Fredericksburgh, {put out by the Ontario Historical Society} being the third Township of Catarawkwee, [which is now called Kingston] in the Province of Quebec,  by the Rev.  John Langhorn in connection with St. Paul's Church. In Geneas' database on the internet it says they have a piece of info on a Joseph Soper in 1802 looks like it is a discharge from the army in a list of disbanded troups, loyalists, formally victualated at the Port of Kingston. Typical records within this document contain, the names of the heads of families and notations regarding the troups and corps, in which a Settler formerly served or whether the person was a loyalist. It would be a good thing to take a look at this.
Craig Burtch of Stratford, Ontario, wrote to Dawn and Earl Soper of Bern, NY  "I was going through C11750 Prince Edward County Census 1851 and C9989 P. E. County Census 1861 and there was a "Sopher" family on there, claimed to be of English derivation."

In Prince Edward County Census Peterborough District 1881 Robert Soper age 70 farmer b/ Upper Canada {I believe he is a native} w/ Polly age 75 b/ Upper Canada, Andrew age 25 farmer b/ Upper Canada Who are these people??????????
