Thomas Valley  mysterywisconsin@gmail.com

Grgrgrandmoth Marie-Dorothee "Sophie" Dolbec  on the Ont census for Prescott Town in 1851, living with father Narcisse, step mother, and step-siblings.  In 1871,  in the same location, but having been married sometime prior to 1862, listed as the mother of 5 children.  Her husband's name  Joseph Vallee/Valley/etc.  Can't find  marr records for that location/ time period.  Joseph  died  between 1875 & 1880.  From census listing,  ascertained that he was  mariner on St. Lawrence,  born ca 1831.  Without death records,  assume he died onboard ship.  Sophie moved to Ogdensburg, where she lived above Valley Dry Goods Store (run by two bros named Valley, which  assume means relatives to Joseph).  She in  Ogdensburg census 1880, listed as widower.  1861 census may hold key to Joseph's identity.  If it took place prior to marr, he may be with other family members, which would  give insight into his origins.  If it took place after their marriage, might give idea where they were married.  Both the Vallee and Dolbec families were Roman Catholic.  In Prescott Town, would the nearest Catholic church at the time have been Notre Dame in Ogdensburg (across the river)?  All of the descendants that lived in that area eventually got married or baptized at that church, which suggests prior association with it. But they don't have a record of that marr. Seeking any info on Joseph Vallee (b. abt. 1831, Quebec, d. bet. 1875 and 1880, Unknown).

Have been researching George Watts, brother of  grfath Herbert Watts. George was b. in 1879, mar  Martha Wales in April 1902.Martha b Scotland, a servant in  farm houses nearby. Is it possible she may have been an orphan and sent her as a "home " child?

Children- Anna- 1902 , Albert 1904, Elsie   1906, Fred    1908-   Believe some of Fred's children returned to the Athens area.  George sets out in 1919 with sons Albert 13 & Fred 11& crosses the border at

Ogdensburg into U.S.A.  Question- Why did they travel all the way to Ogdensburg to cross to reach Watertown? Why did they not cross at Rockport or Kingston? Later Martha followed with daus.  Have not discovered the cemetery where they are buried or definitely where the children's off spring would

be. Was told Robert Watts of Athens was grchild of Fred.  Discovered a tombstone for a FRED WATTS in Elgin !!!

Trying to find Catholic baptisms of children born between 1838-1854.  The Patricks were in New Dublin at that time & had 11 children.  I have checked the St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church microfilm, but they aren’t there.  Since there wasn’t a Catholic church in New Dublin area, could you shed some light as to whether there were “travelling” priests who would go around to baptize children and if so, do you have a feel for which church?  I have a map of the Archdiocese of Kingston and it appears that some of the nearest churches during that time would have been St. Mark’s, Prescott:  St. Philip Neri, Toledo:

One of my gr grfaths, Thomas Lake is on UEL list.  He was a farmer with his bros in White Creek NY from ca 1761 to 1777, when he joined the Queens Loyal Ranger in Skeensborough NY;  was a member of Lt Col Peter's Corp, Thomas' son in law was a Lieutenant in the same unit and I believe he served under and was recruited by Captain Justus Sherwood. The Battle of Bennington, VT was basically fought on his farm which was part of a 4 person land grant known as the Van Corlear, 2 of these people were Thomas' brother and Van Corlear was his brother in law.  As with most loyalist they had to leave New York State as their land had be seized, so they went to Canada and as far as I can tell settled in Wolford Grenville Co.   Thomas died there in 1813 at the age of approx 70 yrs.Several names on UE list are related to Thomas through in-law relationships.   The Wilse Family is one, Thomas' daughter Jane married James Wilse.   Thomas and his family as listed in the census reports for Wolford twsp Grenville CO  for the years 1802, 1804, 1805, 1806 and 1813 so far.   Do not know where he or his wife are buried.
