Has
anyone documented proof that any member of the Shipman family was
United Empire Loyalist? Was Daniel Shipman born 1732 in Conn
died 1809 Leeds, a United Empire Loyalist? Have seen him
referred to as UEL but have also seen that According to the Directory
of Loyalists on the UELAC
website, Daniel Shipman was suspended. What were
the reasons that someone would be suspended from the UE List?
David Shipman is on list of Loyalists in Leeds & Grenville.
Have a David Shipman listed as a brother of Daniel
Shipman‑‑why would one
bro be suspended and the other not?

Great
grandfath was Hugh K Kelly, born
in Canada in 1850. He was raised in a orphanage in or around Broxville,
Canada. : He left Canada came to the USA in Maryland at 14. After the civil
war he came to Oklahoma in the
1880s where he married Lydia Jones ( born in Springfield, Mo. ) They
had 8 children three who died as infants, 2 girls and 3 boys became Adults.
My grfath was Hugh W Kelly. one of the sons of
Hugh K Kelly was one of the citizens of Anadarko, Oklahoma who
signed a letter to ask the state to form the city of Andarko,Oklahoma in 1889.
I have him in several census and his pension for the civil war along with his
civil war discharge from the 13th Maryland infantry. Hugh K Kelley walked
to Maryland in fall 1864 and enlisted in the 13th Maryland Infantry serving 6
months in the Union Army during the civil war
I
am not to sure that I may be able to help you,but if find any of the orphanage
in the Ontario, Canada in 1850s to 1860s I may be able to trace him. He was in
the Civil War records and of course lied about his age. I found a baby born in
Northunderland in 1849 , contacted them, the lady there , she could not
believe that he walked to Maryland (547 miles) at 14, I had her check out a
yeoman with the name of Hugh Kelley, who was in the 1847 census but she said
he was unmarried with 50 acres. I not sure but a it might be the reason the
kid was in a orphange. Hugh W was one of 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Both of
the above are buried in the Carnage, Oklahoma cemetery in Caddo county
Oklahoma. Broxville in on Hugh K Kelly's grave. If you find out anything I
would be grateful. I am looking
to Brocksville as a possiblily as I can not spell any better than my
kin‑folks thanks spell check.

Am
trying to find something on the death of a great great grandfather. His name
Norman MacDonald; at one time lived in Brockville. He had a
very large house built there, 28 rooms, built there which was sold to
the City and turned into The Brockville General Hospital, which had
subsequent wings built on both sides ca 1890. Family records seem to
think it was called Ellersie Place and was located at the corner of
Pearl and Ormond Streets. He had several children born there but
subsequently and prior lived in Dundee, PQ. I am trying to find a
possible obituary for him. I think he died there in Dundee. Sadly the
local paper The Huntingdon Gleaner was not published between 14 Aug 1866 and
13 Jun 1867 because of a mechanical failure and it was probably during this
time that Norman MacDonald died. Was
hoping that the Brockville
Recorder archives might have this information. Since I cannot get to Canada I
was wondering if someone there might be able look up this possible information
for me. He was married to Elizabeth Ogilvie and they had at least three
children born in Brockville, Geogina
Ada MacDonald 21 Apr 1845, my great grand mother, Charles Alexander MacDonald
born 5 Aug 1846, George Dehaven
MacDonald born abt 1850 and possibly a fourth.
He was born appx 1797 in Isle of Skye, Scotland, his mother reportedly
a MacLeod of Dunvegan Castle

JRMcGinn,

Cooke
Background: Briefly, Robert Cooke, my GGGF , born
about 1793 in County Cavan Ireland became a gardener on the estate of Richard
Griffith ( Griffith's Evaluation of Ireland) where he eloped with
Richard's 16 yr old daughter Sarah JANE Griffith.
The couple fled to Canada/Brockville/ Elizabethtown area arriving about
1826‑7. Robert worked
at least for a time at The Charles Jones Potash Works and they lived just
behind Victoria Hall in town . Their children were recorded in the records of
St Peter's Church, Brockville.
John
bn 1828 m Sally Clark 1851; Elizabeth
bn 1831 m John Earl 1851; Jospeh
bn Lambs Pond 1833 m Mary Ann White.; Sarah Jane bn Feb 4 1836 m John McGinn 1854;
Catherine bn 1837 ...unkn;
Robert
died young of TB, 1837‑1840 leaving Jane destitute and her pleas
fell on deaf ears in Ireland as she had been disowned.
In what to me seems like a rash move Jane farmed her children out to Robert
Cooke's relatives (Story and Cooke) and quickly remarried an
American of unknown surname, moved somewhere in the USA and never saw her
Cooke kids again. She had 2 more children in this second mysterious marriage.
One
of their daughters, Sarah JANE Cooke is my GGM as she married John
MCGINN in Lansdowne in 1854 ( Johnstown Marriages) .
So I now have a grip on my Cooke ancestry & a location in Ireland
to research.
What
I do not have is any McGinn information prior to 1849 when John
McGinn, then about 19 was living single as recorded in an Escott
assessment. Our legend is of UEL
connection but I am not sure this is McGinn or Cooke/Cook intermarriage . ( Elizabeth Cook of Elizabethtown m Joseph Cooke in Aug 1831)
Jospeh
Cooke & Richard Cooke of Augusta were
Robert's bros ) Obviously Elizabeth was of another Cook
family.....UNPROVEN YET but maybe she was the d/o Silas Cook of York,
again unproven but I suspect he could be an ancestor of Cornelius Cook
of Lansdowne ( Sabra Ann Cross)
ANYWAY!
Who the Dickens was John McGinn, born near B’ville about 1830?? At least
that’s what we were told!
I can not find any early McGinn records in LG !
Nobody in fam knew who John's parents were, just that he was
born near Brockville. Surname
variations probably played a big part in hampering my efforts and families
bearing names like McGinnes, McQuin(n)/
McQueen, McGuin(n), McGowan, McGlynn,
McKen(n)
all deserve a look.
John McGinn appears nowhere in 1852 census but Lansdowne is lost. Know the fam hist from 1854 on with the newly weds living Conc II Lot 17 small part north of Gananoque then on lot 18 Lansdowne Front to 1865. From 1865‑1869 ...not sure where they were Rockport?? or Brockville? Twins Emma & Simeon born B’ville in 1868 , June 15th; shortly thereafter the fam moved to Orillia where more children were born . Why the move?? John was a shoemaker by trade and maybe he felt it too crowded in LG? Just a guess!
If
anybody can uncover evidence I would be in your gratitude!

David Edward Wilson b. 1861 in Winchester, parents Andrew & Sarah,
Census 1871, David & his parents not listed 1881 David Edward married Margaret Elizabeth
aka Maggie Wilson of North Gower in the Methodist Church in Inkerman.
Some of my Wilson ancestors died in Kemptville but through OCFA &
OGS, and Kemptville records, I never found their burial sites.
The
Kemptville Methodist Church records are located at the Ottawa City Archives
and not in the United Church Archives in Toronto.
The United Church in Kemptville, have a record entitled "Tombstone

Tompkins
G‑G‑G‑Grfath on Loyalist list. ISRAEL TOMPKINS,
was about 25 on Jan 1, 1783 at Riviere du Chene, according to a Muster
Roll of the Loyal Rangers {Edward Jussup, Major Commandant} which is taken
from the "Rolls of the Provincial (Loyalist) Corps, Canadian Command
American Revolutionary Period," prepared by Beacock Fryer and Lieutenant
Colonel Willam A. Smy, C.D.; page 82 #6.
This would make his date of birth approximately 1758.
At this time, he was 5' 9" tall and had 5 years & 3 months in
service from America and was a private in Jessup's Corps of Loyal Rangers. Wish to locate the date he died and where buried as well as
who his parents who were in New York before he mig to Sorel Quebec after the
American Revolution. His son was Nathan Tompkins (My
G‑G‑Grandfather) b. 1795, d. 4, May, 1879. of
township of Oxford‑on‑Rideau, under an Order in Council
dated Nov 5th., 1818, located lot 23, E. S. Communication Road, township of
Harwich. For his services as a private in Captain Daniel Burritt's Flank
Company, Second Regiment of Grenville Militia, between July 2nd., 1812, and
Jan 2nd., 1813, he received the east half of lot 5, conc 10, twsp of
Moore.[Nathan of Oxford‑on‑Rideau, OC 5, Nov. 1818].
Nathan Tompkin's dau, Rebecca Tompkins,(Gr‑Grmoth)
marr James Kelly (Gr‑Grfath).she b about 1841 in Upper Canada or
Quebec‑Died: May of 1923 in El Dorado, Butler County, Kansas at the age
of 82. In 1862. The "Kent
County, Ontario Marriage Registers 1857‑1869; Volume One" lists:
"James KELLY, age 22, of Harwich, born Canada, s/o Thomas &
Hannah, Married 04, May, 1862, Rebecca TOMPKINS, age 21, of
Harwich, Born Canada, d/o Nathan & Rebecca. Witnesses: Richer
TOMPKINS of____________; Eliza TOMPKINS of____________.
Rebecca Tompkins Kelly's son, was Nathan Tompkins Kelly,
(My Grandfather). born: 24, Aug, 1867 in Blenheim, Kent County, Ontario, Died:
06, Dec, 1934, at age 67, in Artesia, Eddy County, New Mexic;
early on a Thurs morning (8:30 a.m.) at his home, about a mile
Northwest of Artesia, of pneumonia. He had moved to Artesia, New Mexico in
1924, during the early oil boom and was an oil rig driller and builder. The
U.S. 1900 Census of Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio, lists Nathan TOMPKINS
KELLY (parents, James & Rebecca Tompkins KELLY), as attaining
the status of a naturalized U. S. citizen in 1879, at about the age of 14.
Since his youngest sister, Orpha Jane KELLY, was born in Kent County in
1875, it appears that he and his family emigrated from Canada between 1875
& 1879. Because his maternal grprnts, Nathan & Rebecca TOMPKINS
both died in 1879, it is conceivable that this is the year that Nathan
Tompkins KELLY & his fam emig to U.
S. Nathan Tompkins KELLY marr Laura Marie STATELER on 25, Dec,
1893 in Ohio Father, Luther
James Kelly was the son of Nathan Tompkins Kelly born: 15, Jun.,
1907 in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio‑Died: 15, Jul., 1972 in Borger,
Hutchinson County, Texas).

Reccalton Younger died in 1899 &
fam returned to Toronto. From the Gananoque Reporter index of BMD I
found that death writeup in the newspaper microfilms died Jan 24, 1899 in
Gananoque. Inr publication of Willowback cemetery
he is listed as being in lot 608, but the dates are in error. The book
has born March 27, 1845 and died Jan 24, 1846. The cemetery did not open until
1856. Ssurviving cemetery records in
Gan have no info about lot 608..
I suspect that death date of 1846 is a transcription error. Is there any info
in your files as to where this burial information came from? Does your branch
have any old records about this cemetery? Do you have any old funeral burial
records from funeral homes in Gananoque in 1899?
To
my knowledge there are no other members of this family buried locally. His
wife is buried with her siblings in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto.

census (pre 1881), marriage or land records . They had
son named Michael McAndrews born in 1845 in Quebec(?) who
married Mary McCabe who was born in 1843 Ireland(?), they were married
in Westport on November 3, 1874 witnessed by James McDonald of North
Crosby Township & Ellen Burk of Hull, QB.
Curious to know if Michael McAndrews had any siblings that you
have record of. Also, we know
that as of the 1881 Canadian Census that Michael & Mary (nee McCabe) had
3 children Michael James (1), B(r)idget (3) and John (5) but are not

Allen LeBaron, 1108 Thrushwood Dr, Logan UT;
Trying
to locate ancestry & vital statistics for WILLIAM WHITE marr about
1816, ELIZABETH ?. Family is identified 1820 cenus Yonge‑‑Wm
White, Betsey, 1 boy,
1 girl; plus in other early baptismal, cemetery, marriage records for Leeds
County. Children: LEWIS 1817,
DIANA 1820, EURETA 1824,
(possible
THOMAS about 1825). Lewis m. 9
Dec 1841, ELINOR SMITH. Diana m. 12
Jul 1848 WILLIAM REDMAN. Louis removed to IA/MN around 1850.
Does
anyone have compiled genealogy that spells out accurate interconnections among
heads of VARIOUS DAY FAMILIES who settled in Leeds County.
For example, is supposition correct that all descend from emigrant Anthony
Day of Gloucester, MA? Names
include WILLIAM (2), JONATHAN, JACOB, RICHARD, etc., as seen
in early Leeds records. Looking for info that goes beyond what is readily
available in LDS data bases and/or internet postings.

Still
looking for Ascenath MUNRO Griffin. Did
she remarried; where buried.
First name spelled with MANY variations...Asenth, Asinth, Cineth,
Esaneth, Esinith, Ascenath, Ascenth,
etc.
Also, I would like to know date of death for Lillian GRIFFIN
Wiltse,
may be buried in the Maynard Cem Augusta Twp
Here
is what I know. In 1861, Ascenath
Griffin's husband Elijah Griffin, gr grfath, came to the United States leaving
her & their 3 year old child, Lillian Griffin. The last place that I find them
together
is in Escott. He starts a family
with my great grandmother, Nancy McCLURG Griffin, in 1872 in Michigan.

**this
would be on the road near the river, just east of the village of Rockport. He,
as E Griffin, is shown at
this location on the 1861 Atlas of Leeds.
In
1871, Ascenath MUNRO Griffin & Lillian Griffin found in1871 Census living
with Edward Spencer Thomas. Edward
Spencer Thomas dies in Dec 1880. He
made a Will out in 1877. When he
dies, it appears that he is worth $75,000‑$80,000.
He leaves a large amount of money to Ascenath Griffin, HIS HOUSEKEEPER,
asks that a piece of his property
be
left to her with directions that a house should be built on this property, but
the value of the house was not to exceed $600.
She was to have the right to live on this property until the time of
her natural death. Her dau,
Lillian GRIFFIN Wiltse, to receive $500 & an organ.
Ascenath
MUNRO Griffin would have been about 40 years old at the time of the death of
Edward Spencer Thomas. It is hard
to believe that she would simply disappear.
I am wondering if she remarried. She
would have the material ingredients to attract someone.
There
was an older Ascenath, my Ascenath's aunt.
The older Ascenath MUNRO married Jeremiah Guild.
Apparently, the older Ascenath and Jeremiah died in Harwich Township,
Kent Co ON, This Ascenath was the
sister of Alfred Alpheus Munro, fath of my Ascenath.
Alfred Alpheus Munro is the son of John Munro and Annetje
"Hannah" Alyea.
From
another researcher, the following info shows the name of one witness at the
marriage of Elijah and Aseneth MONSOW Griffin as Melvina MONSOW.
In the 1861 Census record,
it
shows a Malvina MUNRO living in the family of AA (Alfred Alpheus) Munro.
Elijah
Griffin married Aseneth Monsow, both of Young 6 May 1854 by license Rev Lane.
Wit Gilbert Wickwase & Melvina Monsow Ref: Marriage registers of Upper
Canada Johnstown Dist
"Monsow"
seems incorrect.‑‑a guess would be that Aseneth and Melvina's
surname should be Munro(e)/Monro(e) or Morrow, but I think its Munro.
Note Jeremiah Guild's wife was Aseneth Monroe, much older than this Aseneth‑‑
possibly her aunt ?].

Leeds
Edward & Mercy Thomas are not in the same household. It is difficult to
tell where one household ends and the next starts in the 1861 census.
It appears that Mercy Thomas is the last person enumerated in the house
of her cousin Amasa Mallory in Mallorytown‑‑with his wife and
children & several other
individuals of various surnames.
The
family immediately following is, possibly, the parents and siblings of Aseneth
Munro, wife
of
Elijah Griffin. Note there is a Malvina Munro (witness at marriage was
Melvina).

No
record of Lillie or Emily. No marriage, birth or death records for any.
The following is a possibility for Lillian, but unless there were 2 James

years later, and his obit mentions no children.
