Looking for info on Mary Ann Haydon Church who was the second wife of Basil R. Church, MD, of Merrickville.  Her dates are 1807‑1877.  She was the first woman in Canada to have a congregation & one of the first female ministers in North America.  She was a Universalist and came to Canada probably from the U.S.,  although I believe she is of English ancestry.  She is buried near Merrickville & have been to her grave.  She had four children, three who died young. Any information anyone might have on Mary Ann or the Universalists of Merrickville and nearby area would be greatly appreciated.  Have read some local histories however the Universalist history is all but lost.

Have a copy of  great grandfather George Washington Dunham’s obituary.  It notes that he is “A descendant of those staunch U.E. Loyalists, who served in Burgoyne’s army under Colonel Jessups, and latter sailed up the St. Lawrence, into Canada.”  The obituary, from the Recorder and Times, issue April 15, 1946 further states that his parents were “Daniel Dunham and his wife Pheobe Kilborn.”   I also believe that Benjamin Kilborn, another name on the list, may be Pheobe’s father.

KILBORN/KILBURN have been a dead end for 25 years. Wish to document the Parents of Emma Louise KILBURN/KILBORN  born Sept 25, 1834 Darby(Derby) Vermont.  She mar James Madison Shipp, 14, Sept, 1856, West Lafayette, Tippacanoe, Indiana.  Name is Kilburn on Marriage license.  Found her bro Lawson (I think)& he goes by Kilborn; he born Kingston ON.  From his bio (Clark Co, Illinois) he stated his prnts were William Kilborn & Catherine Powell.  Found Catherine Kilburn/Kilborn in  Monroe Co, NY 1850 census a widow age 53, with following persons listed as her children Laura, Hiram, Emma L & Lawson S.  In Paine Kilborne/Kilburn/Kilborn Book,  I find these children listed to a John.  But have read that William Kilborn, born 6, May 1778 in Litchfield, CT, died in Dec 22, 1845 in Chilli, Monroe Co, NY, & mar to Catherine Powell is Emma's fath.  William is reported to be the son of Benjamin Kilborn & Lucy Bishop.  Benjamin born 4, April 1728 in Litchfield, CT, died 1810 in Elizabethtown ON. Parents reported to be Joseph  Kilbourne & Abigail Stockwell.  The surname is spelled three different ways in these records.  Does any of this sound familiar? Confused as how to prove that this maybe my ancestors.

Richard Rumble <r.m.rumble@sympatico.ca>

Descended from Aaron Soles/Soules and a Catherine (nee Belfour).  Aaron  apparently born in Upper Canada c. 1812, married Catherine in 1835 in Fredericksburgh.  Can find no record of Aaron's parents or specific place of birth.  Record of the marriage of a Daniel Sole of Ernestown to Martha Huntley, in 1805.  Aaron & Catherine are listed in various censuses as living in Prince Edward County (where my link, Margaret Soules,  their dau was born), Adolphustown, South Fredericksburgh, & again in Adolphustown.  Also a John B. Soles and fam listed in the Adolphustown Census of 1810, 1811& 1812.  An entry in the Register of Crown Land Warrants (Volume 85, p.99, #6612) lists a land grant to a John Sowles, son of William Sowles.  A John Soles also petitioned for a land grant in the District of Luneburg in 1790, and apparently received 200 acres there.  In that petition, he cited Capt. Justus Sherwood & Thomas Freeman as witnesses to his military service and good character.  Apparently, with a re‑organisation of Provincial Corps in 1781, Sherwood was under Jessup's command as Captain in  Jessup's Rangers.  In the muster roll of the latter 1781, both Timothy Soles & William Soles are listed. Sowils/Soules/Soles are listed on the Old Loyalist List, & Crown grants were given to a number of Sowles/Soles/Sole for military services rendered to the Crown during the American war, in addition to the grant to 'John Sowles' mentioned above.  Is there a direct connexion between Aaron Soules & any of the loyalists mentioned above.

Am descended from the Loyalist William Scott.  Family always believed that William mar Heltchey Knapp, dau of Sgt. Joseph Knapp UEL but, in own research, have found that Knapp descendants believe that mar Francis Scott, bro of William. My descent is this: William Scott m. Heltchey Knapp (d. of Sgt. George John Carson   Their son, Egbert John Carson m. Emma Florence Dunfield      Their son, Marvin John Dunfield Carson m. Dorothy Mildred Preston     I am their daughter, Barbara Helen Carson Hope for some advice on how to go about clearing up the questions I have about my ancestry:

1. Was the father of William Scott named John?  What are his dates?  Is is wife known?

2.  Brothers of William: David, John Jr., Francis ‑ dates and marriages?

3.  Was Heltchey Knapp in fact the daughter of Sgt. Joseph Knapp and who did she marry?  I have visited her grave in Maynard and can just barely trace "Heltchey wife of Wm Scott"  What are her dates?

John Robert Arthur McGinn, Thunder Bay ON       rolo@acoservices.com

Our Legend is that we are UEL from the northern colonies & originally Northern Ireland. Have not found any McGinn/McGinnis families in your area but  grgrand father John McGinn (born 1830 in Upper Canada  presumably  grandson of UEL folk) mar Sarah Cooke Dec 6th 1854 in Lans, Rev Wm Barnett, Meth. Witness: James Morris, son of John Morris* & Ann Jane Clark (Ireland to Drummond to Kitley to Escott) & Rev J Walker who I don’t know.  Grgrandmoth Sarah Cooke was either Sarah Jane or Sarah Ann. Her death registration Mar 21 1900 has her as Sarah Ann as does the cemetery record at Mount

Pleasant , Toronto  Her registration says also she was born near Brockville. Absolutely everywhere else in all records she is Sarah J or Jane.  A case can be made for both names Ann or Jane.  Richard & Mary Ann Cooke (Elmsley to Escott) had a daughter Sarah Ann born about 1835.  Richard Cooke and John Morris* seemed to be related or at least trusting friends as Richard signed more than one memorial as a witness for John Morris who was James Morris father...James appears to have married John MCGinn's sister Mary Ann, although I can not find the marriage there is evidence it occured before the 1851 census maybe in Kitley.  So there is a possible connection John McGinn to Richard Cooke's clan in Escott & suppose it is possible that he married Richard's daughter Sarah Ann ...BUT!!  Enter the family of Robert and Jane Cooke of St Peter's Anglican, Brockville! Diocese of Ontario found this fam with sons John born 1828, Joseph born 1833, daus Catherine born 1837, Elizabeth born 1831 & SARAH JANE born Feb 4th, 1836.  Our Sarah died as stated Mar 21 1900 472 Spadina , Toronto at...63 years . So the math works for this Sarah too  Adding to the case for this Sarah Jane being my Great grand mother is easy.  Am in possession of old autograph book belonging to Margaret Jane McGinn d/o John and Sarah( born April 6th, 1865, Lansdowne or Escott ).  On a page therein appears, " Your cousin Maggie Cooke, Lansdowne 1881" .  A quick glance at the LDS 1881 Canada Census shows Margaret Jane Cooke , daughter of Cornelius & the late Sabra Ann Cross.  Also Maggie, daughter of John And Sally (Clark) Cooke.... Also in Lansdowne in 1881 was Joseph & Mary Ann (White) Cooke with no Maggie. From another researcher have learned that Joseph in Lansdowne was born 1833 ...Is he the son of ROBERT AND JANE mentioned above?? He  born same year.  Is John Cooke in Lansdowne his bro? His birthdate is down as 1826 but  6 could be mistaken for 8, or 8 for 6 by  transcriber ...   If John & Joseph are brothers with a sister Sarah Jane, given "Maggie Cooke cousin", it is likely that Sarah Jane daughter of Robert & Jane Cooke is  Great Grand Mother.  In 1835, Ogle Robert Gowan, scoundrel cum laude, had all his Orangemen sign a petition protesting a reformer win in Leeds!  The list is signed by Robert & Richard Cooke one below the other.     ( They are the only Cookes to sign)  would indicate they are prob related & came to sign together. Were Robert & Richard brothers? Father and Son? In 1851 census Richard is 43, born in Ireland.  Cannot find Robert and Jane in the 1851 census. He seems to have had his fam 1828 to 1837 so would guess his mar to be in the mid 1820s & birth 1795‑1805. Age in the 1851 census could be 45‑50 years.   Trying to find fellow researchers & descendants of the Leeds Grenville Cook families (Cooke) who may have records enough to Help me, a Cooke descendent.

Looking for following records:

1 Marjory McTavish  to Alexander Rose ca 1875 in Mountain or South Gower Township (Living in Mountain Twship in 1881 and  1901) and death for her & Alex

2 Sara McTavish to whom???????same place. She born N Elmsley, christened in the Presb Church on Sept 27, 1847 so may have mar in the 1860s or 70s or 80s . Lost sight of this lady. There appears to be a mistake in the death s of this family. A Chrissy is listed as dying in 1855, buried Craig St Cem , 7 years old  but we find Christina still living in 1900. Could this be Sarah listed erroneously as Chrissy? We don't know and perhaps never will.

3 John McTavish to Olive ?????? after 1881 and before 1901‑about 1884 or 85. ( any death for John?) What church did this family attend obviously across the border in South Gower?   Does  the cemetery in South Gower have a name except the South Gower cemetery? Grandmother was Margaret May McTavish( granddaughter of Margaret who was sis of Neil)  mar to Everett Lavender.  Only 5 children out of 10 lived to old age & have accounted for all now . Margaret & Christina(1851 called Christian)  never mar.  If Sarah died as well have only four left after Mother's death with only 2 having descs.  Have 1851 N Elmsley census & only a Christian is listed. Chrissy should also have been listed as she would have been born 1848 & died 1855. Perhaps Sarah was called Sissy & listed incorrectly.
