Roger Moore    rogerlmoore@blueyonder.co.uk

Elsie Annie Moore was the elder sister of my late father.   “We have just discovered, October 2011, That Elsie Annie Moore was in fact emigrated to Canada On 1st June 1905.  Elizabeth Palmer the Matron of The Home for Little Girls at Brookleaze House, Bath, went to Canada, where she had a brother living, after the closure of Brookleaze House.  She took with her Elsie Annie Moore (8), Beatrice Higgins (9), Ethel Bush (8), Katie Jones (8), Lily Nowell (11), Louise Arnold (6), Maud Jones (9) & Sarah Banks (11).  They were part of a bigger party led by Mrs. Louisa Birt through the Liverpool Sheltering Home.  They sailed from Liverpool on 1st June 1905 on the S/S Bavarian, arriving at Quebec on 10th June 1905.  Their destination was Knowlton, Quebec.  This information was discovered through the Library and Archives Canada website.  Ref. RG 76 C1a.  Microfilm T-484  Type of Record Passenger Lists.

Later, discovered a marriage for Elsie Ann Moore (Stewart).  All the info tallied with what we knew of Elsie  She married, by license, because she was underage, to Ralph Erskine Kavanagh, bachelor of legal age of Fort William, Ontario, on 28th October 1914 at the Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Sherbanche, Quebec by the Rev William Macmillan.  The witnesses were Alex Stewart and W. K. Rattray.  Noticing that Elsie was now also using the name Stewart, we searched the Canadian 1911 census for her under that name & found her, aged 13,  with the family of Alexander and Sarah Stewart and their two sons, A. W. (22) and Russell (19).  She was described as 'daughter'.  Clearly her placement with the Stewarts had worked well and they had included her into their family.  The family address was Main Street, Richmond, Richmond and Wolfe, Quebec.   We then found that Elsie died on 28th December 1923 at Hawkesbury, Prescott, Ontario, Canada aged 27 and was buried at Hawkesbury West (Cemetery) on 30th December 1923.  It seems that she was survived by her spouse, Ralph Erskine Kavanagh.  Her Death Certificate states that the causes of death were Pneumonia, Hydrothorax [Excess fluid in the pleural cavity] and Pulmonary Tuberculosis.  Her parents are given as the Stewarts and her husband who registered the death as R E Kavanagh.  It seems that she was living at her adopted parents [the Stewarts] address, 66, Main Street West, Richmond, Quebec when she died.”

She obviously had a difficult life and it leaves me wondering if, in the short time of her marriage before she became ill, she may have had children.  As the Ontario Birth Records available on the web stop at 1909, I am wondering if there might be local records that might reveal children of the marriage.  It would be great to learn anything more about the family.

President of the Cossitt Family Association www.cossitt.org is looking for any photographs of the family of Newton Cossitt Senior & his family.  In particular his youngest son Leonard Randles Cossitt & his wife Minnie Elizabeth Colcock.  Hoping readers may have some info tucked away in their own collections.  Have pictures  of their home in Brockville & sketches of the arena and the factory.   Do not have is any family pictures that I can say for certain who the individuals are.  Receive a family photo from a gentlemen in New York but the picture just had the Cossitt’s of Brockville written on the back.  Since there were many Cossitt’s living in Brockville from 1870 on I have not been able to identify anyone for sure.  Another picture from Doug Grant and is a profile picture of Leonard Randles Cossitt in his late teens. Any direction to continue my research will be greatly appreciated.  A story of the Cossitt fsmily will appear in the next issue.
